Saying goodbye to a pet

Yesterday we said goodbye to our almost 10 year old dog.. He had a tumor in his nostril and it affected his breathing. Lately it has gotten worse and it had spread to the other nostril. We went to the vet to ask what she though and it was time. Lots of crying and heartbreak. He fell asleep with his tail waving.. He was so happy and had so much energy right into the end and it just feels wrong, like we made a mistake. But we saw how much effort every breath through his nose took... But still, he was so happy... I feel like it wasn't his time yet, even though the vet thought so.. We didn't want him to suffer.. I am sorry if this doesn't make any sense, I'm a mess, second dog in 5 months.. I just needed to rent a bit.. Thanks for your time!
