So my wife and I who are both military recently found ourselves in a predicament when waiting for our new apartment to open up and have had to stay with a friend for a month until we are able to move in. I love animals as does my wife (I love pretty much everything and my wife has just started warming up to cats). The friend we are staying with has two pets, one a small yorkie/maltese mix looking dog that they keep out back and a slender deep orange and white cat that is fairly young and looks like cinnamon toast. My wife has spent a bit of time playing with the cat and is now attached, she wants to steal it when we leave and I almost have justification in my heart to do so however, I couldnt leave the dog in this situation and I couldn't take it to the apartment. The friends havent really ever shown much care for the animals. They dont have dog food and what they have for the cat is a small bag. The dog is locked in the back yard with no shelter or overhangs so her overgrown fur gets soaked when it rains and I can only imagine shes starving due to not being fed and not even having food bowls out there. After a futile search of the house for dog food, I ended up giving her a little bowl of cat food to hold her over until I can buy her food myself. The cat is dirty to say the least but friendly and seemingly starving based on her reaction to me finding and giving her food. What should I do once I leave? I could bring the dog to a shelter and say it's a stray and just tell the friends it ran away. I'm afraid to say the legality is for sure questionable but I care for the animals well being so, advice?
