INFO (and apology for the length): Below is what I’m currently doing and info on Shnikeys, also cat tax. I’m just looking to see if there’s stuff other pet owners do to help their asthmatic kitties that I could consider doing too!
My ~11 year old kitty was diagnosed with asthma two years ago. She is FIV+, though it is unknown if it’s due to having the vaccine when she was a kitten or truly positive. Her symptoms are generally the same, though they’ve displayed themselves in varying combinations since the diagnosis andalways in spring and winter. My vet and I think it may be allergy-related due to the pattern of visits in late fall and early spring over the last few years.
Here’s what I’m currently doing; regular sweeping and dusting throughout the week, low-dust litter, a dehumidifier runs April-Sept and when we turn the heat on, the humidifier comes out to keep the house humidity around 45. When I mow, I make sure I close the windows up in the house and if the pollen count is high I don’t throw them wide open either. Nobody in the home smokes.
She’s currently on her second taper of prednisolone this spring, along with amoxicillin since pred is an immunosuppressant, and the vet suggested trying a half tab of Zyrtec every other day indefinitely.
