I have an orange cat that I took in 8 years ago when he followed me home from the dumpsters out back of my place. I was going to just have him be an outside cat I fed, but when I opened the door, he ran inside and curled up on my bed, so that was pretty much that. He's always been sweet to me, but he's still always demonstrated feral behavior, like knocking over trash cans looking for food (even though I feed him arguably better food than I feed myself), occasionally peeing and pooping outside the litter box, generally acting like a feral raccoon, and the worst, legitimately terrifying aggression towards strangers. He's been banned from two vet clinics, and I even had a vet who did house calls come over once, and she was too scared to examine him and just told me to weigh him every once in a whole to make sure he wasn't losing weight and to check back in five years, lol.
I've lived alone this whole time and every time someone comes over, it's a whole thing protecting whoever's there from my cat. Now I'm going to be moving across the country to live with my boyfriend, and as you can imagine, I'm pretty full of dread about it. My cat hates him just like my cat hates pretty much everyone that isn't me (he does like my parents. He also likes the cat sitter that he initially hated but became cool with over time because the cat sitter gets cat behavior) My boyfriend's said he's onboard to help me avoid a shelter or putting him down, but that he won't be allowed in the house and that he'd have to stay in the garage or something. I totally get that, but I can't imagine doing that to him. I realized I'll probably have to rehome him. I've messaged some cat shelters asking for advice, and they've suggested I try and find a barn that might be interested in taking him as a working cat, but that he sounded totally unadoptable. He's lived inside and been pampered for almost a decade, so I don't know how he'd fare as a barn cat.
I was willing to happily put up with him forever, but I also don't want to live alone forever. Not sure what to do.
