Two year old cat isn't settling down. Keeps us up, knocks things over, ruins furniture. How can I fix this so I don't have to re-home him?

We have three pets - a 4 year old lab (who's the most gentle, docile dog you'd ever meet), a 4 year old cat (who's also the most docile, gentle cat you'll ever meet), and then Bernard - our newest pet who just turned 2.

We adopted him from the shelter as a kitten. He was always very rambunctious and full of energy - we thought he'd grow out of it but he hasn't. To keep it short, I'll try to highlight some of his problem behaviors.

  • Knocks over the water dishes around the house - constantly soaks the carpet and having to mop up water.

  • Terrorizes the older cat. Stalks her and always tries to playfight. She gets annoyed and tries to hide from him.

  • Sprints around the house full-speed. Jumps 4-5 feet up walls and doors (not an exaggeration) forcefully, causing the doors to rattle violently. This is loud enough to wake us in the middle of the night.

  • Some nights he's great, cuddles in and sleeps with us. Others he's sprinting around the house, over the bed and over us (has even ran across my face before.. not a fun way to wake up). We've tried designating a room for him to sleep in at nights, but he jumps off the door and it rattles the house.

  • Ruins furniture. Scratches chairs, the couch, etc. Eats plants.

Now don't get me wrong, sometimes he's great. Affectionate, cuddly, etc. But the other times he's ruining the house, keeping us awake, or terrorizing our older cat. He has countless toys throughout the house (motion sensor ones that activate when he wants, simple toys, scratching posts, a tall cat-tower, etc). He gets plenty of attention. It's not like we're cramped for space, either. It's just the 3 pets, the girlfriend and I in a 3 bed 2000 sq ft house. We've tried exhausting him with play before bed, squirting with water, etc all to no avail.

What else can we try? I really don't want to re-home him, but I'm wondering if he's better suited for a 1-pet household.
