My shih tzu/jack russell, Marbles, is quite old and has always had dental issues. We have taken her to three vets in the last month (one of whom was a dental specialist). All agree that she needs extractions and a cleaning. A few months prior her old vet warmed me not to let any one operate on her teeth, although he said this without looking at her mouth or blood work.
I'm told that her heart and kidneys look good, but I've been warned that the jaws of small dogs can sometimes break during this procedure. I question whether vets are too quick to rush us into an operation that may be too risky, given my dog's age. Yet I don't want her to suffer from all her dental issues. I just want her to enjoy her golden years!
If we do decide to do the surgery (it seems to be leaning that way). We're going to have to decide which vet to perform the operation. The dental specialist is beyond what I can afford without a loan, although I am more than willing to borrow money for the sake of this doggie, who means the world to me. What holds me back is some of the negative reviews the dental specialists' practice has, my mom was also really turned off by her. Any suggestions on how to evaluate a vet's practice and choose the best surgeon of the three?
