Considering different pet options, any advice?

hello! I'm a recent college grad who moved some ways away for a job. my folks always had dogs growing up, and now that I'm living on my own I wish I could get one. however, i'll be living in apartments, likely alone, and working 8 to 5 for the foreseeable future, so there are a lot of roadblocks to being able to get a dog and being able to adequately care for a dog. I've been doing some research into other pets but I'm wondering if there are any options or factors I'm missing. I've done a bunch of research on ferrets and have absolutely fallen for them (to the point where I might choose a pair of ferrets over a dog in the future someday), and think their sleep cycle would be a great fit for working full days and spending evenings taking care of them. However, I'm anxious about their dietary needs and health problems. It seems like they're not too hardy and medical care is expensive if you're in an area that even provides it. I'm in the buffalo new york area, and based on facebook it seems like there's a healthy "ferrent" community and some exotic vets, but I still don't know that I would be able to tank frequent emergency vet visits financially in the future and don't want to take in an animal I wouldn't be able to adequately care for. Are there any other pets that are similar to ferrets between their sleep schedule and their almost dog-like way of bonding and playing with you? I want to avoid animals that would just tolerate me at best and be afraid at worst like mice or guineau pigs (i don't mean to put anyone else's pets down but my kid sister has GPs and between their demeanor and the way hay smells and gets everywhere... i do not think they are for me). I've thought about gerbils because their care seems very in my wheelhouse but I'm not sure where they sit on that bond versus tolerate spectrum and apparently computers stress them out (because of something called ultrasound which actually sounds pretty cool) and in this day and age I'm not sure I could find a place for a cage adequately far from something computerized. there's the regular gamut of chain pet stores near me as well as an "exotic" place with hedgehogs (i feel like i had a good reason to rule them out but forgot, is there a common catch with them?), sugar gliders (adorable but don't they scream at night and shit on you while they glide?), prairie dogs (haven't done enough research on them yet honestly), and short-tailed opossums (same worry about the bond versus tolerate spectrum and also seems like there's limited intel on them as pets out there in general but they seem very promising otherwise). I know rats are pretty common pets who are apparently p cool but they freak me out a little not gonna lie. i know a cat seems like an obvious answer here also but cats don't really tend to like me that much. with my thought process out there, is there an obvious pet that I'm missing that ticks all of the boxes? Is there just not a pet like the kinds I like that works with my schedule and financial situation? are any of my preconception about any of these animals wrong (are ferrets really that fragile??)? is a pet in general a bad idea for someone working 8 to 5 and living alone? whatever pet i choose if something ends up being realistic, it won't be tomorrow- i'll take the time to save up and adequately set up an environment and do a shit ton of reading on their care before actually getting them, and definitely get a pair for the animals that get lonely. i'm also about to start a new lease and if wherever i end up doesn't allow pets, i guess this was all moot and i'll get a tamogatchi. thanks for taking the time to read!
