So I got a 3yo dog a week ago, and I'm having no luck in building a connection with him. Not to downplay what I thought was going to happen, I was fully prepared to work with a dog that was nervous, but I never expected the dog to act worse towards me every day. Day 1 I quickly learn he isn't motivated by treats or toys, I assumed he was nervous. I let him be, gave him personal space as he felt things out, and he was doing okay. Every day since has been progressively worse. So he isn't motivated by treats, he isn't motivated by toys, heck I even try chicken and beef and it only works sometimes. This dog will not work with me. As I type this he sits in the doorway to the backyard (where he has been for FOUR HOURS) and every time he sees me or even catches a sound that might have been me he starts barking. Its not "hey come look" barking either. If I attempt to approach him he immediately runs outside and barks constantly. Now I get it, I can be pretty big in comparison but I always try to "get on his level" so I'm not towering over the dog. I always try (even when I'm at my wits end) to talk in calm tones without a whole lot of energy to keep a calm environment. Yet despite all this he still hides. Like I said its worse every day too. He growls at me more than he did at first, he barks at me more than he did when he started. He will not do anything I ask obviously. He has a stuff that he sleeps with that's "his own" but he won't respond to it if I try to utilize that. I'm at a loss guys, everything I've been able to research either doesn't help or doesn't apply. Please tell me you have some way to help.
