This is a long post so sorry. So about a year ago we knew a couple with a dog who was looking for a place to stay. Long story short we invited them to move into the finished basement to help us pay off the house quicker. They have a lab mix and we have a Siberian Husky and two cats. At first things were fine. The dogs seemed to get along great. They were always playing tug and running around. Well their dog started eating our pups food. This wasn’t a big deal because she would steal his food too. The food we were buying is more expensive than what they were feeding their dog so to stop wasting money feeding a dog that wasn’t ours we switched our pup to the same food he had. However, Sled dogs need more zinc and she developed a deficiency and was loosing fur. We were horrified and felt awful for switching her food. So she is back on the old food and we asked the neighbors to keep his food downstairs so she can’t eat his food. However he is still trying to eat her food. So we started feeding her at night after they had brought their dog downstairs for bed. Now our pup is really aggressive about her food. She spends all day guarding it. She’s territorial with the cats and even growls at us if we get to close while she’s eating. She won’t play with the other dog anymore either. I feel awful that she spends all day worrying about her food. We’ve gone back to leaving it out all day but she is still territorial and we are constantly chasing the other dog away from her bowl. What can we do to help?
Tl;dr our dog is showing food aggression after a new dog moved in.
