Any help is greatly appreciated!
In a bit of a dire situation. Let me just preface this by saying the parrot isn't mine, I'm living with someone for a few weeks and they just happen to have a parrot. Anyways...
I think he's depressed. He self mutilates (pulls out his own feathers), rarely eats and gets very aggressive at times even if we haven't done anything to provoke him. He's 7 years old, but this has only been happening for the last year. The owner of the parrot doesn't have the time at the moment to take him to the vet, as they often works long days. This I think might be part of the reason he's upset, because he can spend up to 7 hours a day by himself. He does however, have the choice to leave his cage whenever he pleases and wander around the house, and there is a cat who he interacts with sometimes (they put up with each other, they don't attack each other, he grew up with the cat) the parrot also has a plethora of toys which he never uses.
His cage is often dirty, from food and excrement, and his perch is often covered in ants as he eats fruit on his perch, but as it's not my parrot it's not my place to clean up his stuff or tell his owner what to do. The owner also gets angry with him alot, as they think that if they tell him off for it enough, he'll snap out of it. I spend a lot of time at home, so I try and interact with the parrot as much as possible. Is there anything else I can do that might possibly help his situation while he waits to see the vet? I don't want to see him get so bad that he ends up dying or something because he is all the owner has left (their partner passed away a while ago and their kids all live 5 hours away and rarely visit from what I'm told)
Any advice??????
