I'm sorry if this kind of question comes up a lot, I've read some stuff online but there are so many variables with my situation and I'm getting increasingly worried about the situation. I'm going to be moving from Iowa to Pennsylvania with a cat who belonged to my dad. He passed away in 2011, so I've been taking care of her ever since, and I could never give her away at this point.
I've only had a driver's license for a few years, so I'm dreading the roughly 20 hour drive I'll have to make enough as it is, and taking my cat only complicates it.
I've never used a harness for her, and I don't know if it'd be too late to start now with a couple weeks left. She hates being in the cat carrier, but I think she hates being in the car as much, so I'm not sure a harness would make much difference, beyond letting her get out of the car for a bit.
I'm also wondering if finding a motel will be a problem, since I've heard a lot don't allow cats. I heard you can book a place ahead of time, but I don't know how much of an option that would be, especially with complicating factors such as the long distance, a cat to stop to care for, and a knee injury I've had that can flare up during long drives and requires breaks, so I couldn't really predict where I'd be at nightfall. Is there some sort of place that has a list of cat friendly motels?
I don't even know how long my trip will take at this time, as Google Maps shows one route as around 16 hours, but a friend told me it would probably take me closer to a full day if I wanted to avoid really bad traffic from nearby cities. I'm generally uncomfortable on the interstate, and my cat whines constantly in a mere 5 minute drive to the vet. So I hate the thought of being on the interstate for over a dozen hours while she makes loud, distracting noises the entire time. Someone recommended seeing a vet about sedatives, but I'm guessing they wouldn't last the entire drive and I'd be expected to give her something myself, if that's even possible, and I'd be paranoid of giving too much.
Probably the biggest problem though is figuring out what to do about her going to the bathroom. She's going to have to go at some point, and I don't know what to do about that. Is there some sort of material I could leave in the bottom of her cat carrier, like old rags or a ton of paper towels? I'd hate to have some urine spill onto the car interior and smell that for several months.
I'm sorry for asking such a long series of questions, I'd really appreciate any help that people with more experience could provide.
