There's a cat door on my slider door which leads to the overgrown side yard, where the cats loved to hang out and go to the bathroom. I had one stubborn male older cat that would pee inside a lot for some reason, but he recently passed and left his 2 younger sisters behind.
And they were doing a great job of going outside, until my mom had the side yard razed of all plant life, and also shut my screen door slider. For a few weeks they were going to the bathroom in clothes piles and corners CONSTANTLY and we couldn't figure out why.
I finally realized that it was because the screen door was shut, but the damage was done. They still hang out outside often, and one goes to the bathroom out there always now. But the other is this scaredy cat who now has decided to go in my pile of dirty laundry now, and occasionally a corner.
It's driving me up the wall. It's been a month now and she's still doing it, despite going to the side yard all the time. I want to try to "wean her off" using the box of dirty laundry by slowly removing the laundry and box entirely, but I'm worried this will just make her start peeing in corners again, which would be much worse. (Litter boxes inside is not possible, I tried it for years and it makes me sick.)
I have a couple of theories for what to do.
-
Set a litter box out there for a while, then remove it when she learns to go outside consistently again. That way I'll only have to clean it for a little while. Probably the best idea

Ensure the side yard gets overgrown again. I was thinking I could find a grass that cats like to defecate in but it turns out that doesn't exist. So I might as well just water the sideyard and get a bunch of weeds growing. I think the sideyard being barren makes them feel unsafe from predators/the barky dog next door. They really liked hiding among the tall weeds before.

Patch a hole in the fence that the dog barks through occasionally. Same as above
Does anyone else have some other ideas? I'm going to trial the litterbox thing soon; hopefully that should give me some time to get my room back in order again.
