How lonely do solo cats get when left at home?

My gf has a cat in her studio apartment. She treats him very well, keeping everything very clean, making sure her he has a nice view and plenty of sunlight and things to scratch on when she's gone. He likes to be near her and is excited when she comes back from work. She takes him on short walks on a harness and leash, and he really loves that. She is a homebody and spends a lot of time with him, esp. on weekends.

She works regular hours at her full-time job. When she has an obligation after work, sometimes I will go to feed him and hang out. Other times I can't do that so she leaves him extra food (he's not obsessed with food and will munch only when he's hungry). Those days aren't that common but sometimes he's alone from about 7:30 am to 9:00 pm. I feel bad for him. He can watch the birds and such out the window, but I wonder how lonely he gets. I wish he had a cat or dog friend to keep him company, but her place is too small.

So my question is, is it OK that he is occasionally left alone for long periods of time?
