I want to adopt but unsure if I have allergies?

I never grew up with animals because my parents didn't like pets. Now that I recently moved out of their place, I'd like to adopt a cat. When I was younger (around 5), I had an allergic reactions to a family friend's cat (asthma, itchy eyes, hives). Since then, I haven't had much interaction with cats. I have had more interactions with friends' dogs, with some I reacted to (golden retriever, shih tzu), and others I haven't (american cocker spaniel, schnzauer). I want to know if I am allergic to cats now.

I'm hoping to get some suggestions on how I can test if I can make a long-term commitment to be a cat owner? I have visited my local humane society quite often and played with the cats. On the car rides home, I do sneeze a bit and get some hives, but besides that I find it manageable, but again, these visits are relatively short. I requested an allergy test too, but the doctor said the wait will be 2 years?!
