Advice for adopting a dog in an apartment?

Tldr: what to look for when adopting a dog while living in a (large) apartment?

I'm interested in adopting a dog. I volunteered for a local shelter and went hiking with an adorable pupper last weekend, and it made me even more sure that I would enjoy having a wagging tail around the house. I've always had cats growing up, and I love them but want a more active companion. I also live with my boyfriend and he loves dogs, but I will consider this adoption to be "my dog" (in case we break up, or some other responsibility requires us to move or separate).

Now, I know I will be a great owner as I have so much love and time to provide this new family member. Walks twice a day, playing at the dog park on premises, and hiking trips will be regular highlights for my furry friend. However, s/he will be inside alone 9 hours out of the day when my boyfriend and I are at work.

When I talk to agencies about adopting, what qualities should I look for? I don't want a complete couch potato, and our apartment is pretty big (1000sqft), would "medium energy" be a good description?
