My cat is 28 pounds of fluffy black love. Before you get on me about diets and animal abuse by overfeeding, consider that he is a healthy, large maine coone, and his weight is totally normal for his breed and we've been told by our vet that he does not need a diet.
Maine coone's are notorious for their long thick fur and Shredder here is no exception. His fur is long enough in some places to where I can poke him and my whole finger will disappear. The problem with this is grooming him. He gets flea baths 1-2 times a year with shampoo and conditioner formulated for cats. This normally happens in spring to summer when it's warm enough so that he won't freeze while wet. We also normally trim his fur around this time, and make sure to get rid of any mats to the best of our ability without cutting his skin.
The problem is, the rest of the year all I really do is brush him, and he only lets me brush certain places. I'm not allowed to brush his belly so he gets thick mats that I can't brush out. Also, since he has long fur around his butt, he often gets poo stuck in his fur. Am I supposed to just hold this behemoth down so I can brush his belly? And how would I stop the poo problem? Normally I would cut it away, but I'm not supposed to have any contact with kitty fecal matter because I'm pregnant. I would take him to a groomer for this, but I don't want to subject them to touching my cats gross butt and he gets upset when we're away anyway. Is there any way to clean him up that you guys know of?
