Advice on how much I should be feeding my large cat?

My cat is 13-15 lbs and about a year and a half old. He’s not fat, but he is a large cat. I have been feeding him IAMS Perfect Portions wet food. A friend of mine has a cat that had urinary track problems because he wasn’t getting enough water, so I’m most comfortable feeding my own baby only wet food just in case.

The feeding guidelines on the package says 3 portions per 5 lbs of weight. This would mean I would be feeding my cat 9 portions a day.. which would be $300 a month. I’ve seen posts of people saying their cat’s food costs them $30 a month.

Last vet visit (same weight) i was told “whatever you’re feeding him now is perfect” and that was 3 portions a day. When I was feeding him this amount he always seemed hungry (he’s also very food driven and will eat absolutely anything. So I don’t know if it would matter how much he was fed, he might still act hungry just cuz he loves to eat)

Did I accidentally go with an expensive brand? Does anyone else here use this brand? Would it be detrimental to my cat’s health to buy a cheaper brand or feed him only dry food? Am I supposed to calculate protein and calories and determine the amount to feed him that way? Thanks in advance
