About two hours ago I had to put down my dog perdita. She was 15 years old and today she was breathing very hard and had white gums. Thanks to the AskReddit community I came to the conclusion that she had an infection and needed to be taken to the vet ASAP we called in to a closed clinic and they were so kind as to come in just for us. We took Perdita to the clinic and they were very kind and told us that she was suffering from pancreatitis and that our best coarse was to put her down. My mother and I agreed and we stayed with her all the way to the end and I hope that her final moments were comfortable and that us being there helped her. We will persevere but it’s still very hard. But what truly worries me is how my other dog, rusty, will deal with her death. He is seven years old and Perdita was basically with him since day one. He doesn’t seem to know what has happened yet and I’ve kept the cover that we took perdita in and her collar away from him hoping that will help but I just don’t know how to deal with this. this is the first time I have lost a dog and I’ve had perdita since I was 4! I mean I freaking named her and she helped my little siblings learn how to walk! I’ve never been through this before but I’m so worried that rusty will slide into a depression and I just don’t know what to do for him. Please. Anything on how to help my dog with the grieving process will be extremely appreciated thank you for your time.
