Anyone ever take their cats on vacation?

This is mostly just a rhetorical question/vent. We have 3 cats and 1 dog. Typically, when going out of town for a weekend, the cats stay with a timed auto feeder and the dog goes with or to his grandparents-in-law. Any longer and my friend comes by to check on the cats for a few, maybe 30 minutes. This christmas my husband, dog, and I are driving to my parents 24 hours away, we'll be gone 12 days. I havent seen them since they retired so far away and my dad has health issues, I desperately want to go see them.

Even just a weekend, and 2 of the cats go on liter box strikes. These two are very attached to us, and I know they're panicked that we're gone. They are the opposite of the aloof uncaring cat stereotype.

My parents love our pets and would graciously take them in for the week. Except the same 2 cats that hate being alone, also hate the car. :( I dont know what's more stressful for them, 2 12-hour days driving in the car, or 2 weeks of solitude with only a friend they barely know maybe 30 minutes a day.

Realistically, they'll be staying home. I cant imagine putting them through the torture of 2 days of driving, a brand new environment, and another 2 days of driving. Plus the torture on us listening to their screams that long. Plus, we're hoping to sleep in the car rather than get a hotel room.

I wish there was another answer!
