Cat Advice

Hey peeps of reddit, need some advice about a new cat I adopted!

I adopted a new cat (2 years old) this past weekend after some deliberation and I am a bit anxious. She was doing well until today. She was very snuggly and loving before I left to go workout in the evening, but when I came back, she must have been by the door and I opened the door and she (I suspect) was slightly clipped by the door. She seemed scared and immediately ran into the living room where she hid under the couch. I crawled to see if she was ok and she seemed as though she didn't have any injuries or anything...I tried gently petting her with my outstretched arm which she seemed receptive to. I left to go cook some food and intermittently she would respond well to me petting her.

She came out from under the couch and was exploring a little, and I tried slowly approaching her and she freaked out. She crawled low to the floor and when i put my finger in front of her to try rubbing behind her ear, she scrambled and went underneath the couch.

I was giving her some space and an hour or so went by and I tried petting her from under the couch again when she started hissing at me and tried biting me (she missed). I'm just really confused as to why she's so afraid all of a sudden. I know some of it is probably growing pains since she's so young and this is a new home and everything but she seemed as though she was doing so well. I feel like sh!t and feel like the worst pet owner in the world right now and just want to see what I can do to help.

Thanks guys, really appreciate it.
