Tldr - new shelter cat stresses me out mewing to go run and hide under living room furniture and starve until I get her out.
I recently took advantage of waived adoption feesat our local humane society. I moved into a new roommate situation and the girl prior to me had cats. One of my new roommates has a cat that was lonely, and I've been wanting a cat. She said he gets along better with female cats so i picked out a female.
She just turned 8, had been at the shelter almost two months, and to the best of my knowledge came from a hoarding type situation. The first couple days she hid under my bed or in my walk-in closet. Not a big deal, I expected that. She comes out more and more, will meow for pets for a couple minutes, then go back under my bed. She's only tried to venture out once prior and my roommates cat hissed at her, which no big deal they need time. First day she was here, he came in and they booped noses a little and I think they'll get over it.
My other roommate (not the male cats owner) texted me the other day when I had been gone for an hour or so and asked if she could open my door and let the cat out because she was "freaking out and ripping up the carpet". Until this point, I've had to come home from work or whatever and I'll peek under the bed and say hi and after a half hour she'll come out. She's super super quiet and she mews instead of meow. She opened my door and said they were hissing at each other and my cat was under the bed when I came home so I have no clue how accurate any of that was because my roommate wAs pretty stoned. Bought a cool scratch post and sprayed "don't scratch here" stuff near the door.
Two nights ago, the cat is mewing at my door to get out of the room, so annoyed and tired i let her out. She immediately runs under a recliner and stays there, completely, until last night when I had someone pick the recliner up. She ran under my bed and completely ignored me. I'm super super pregnant and can't handle lifting up furniture to get her out constantly any time she for whatever reason gets a hair up her ass and wants to venture out, which ultimately just means running under the living room furniture and absolutely not coming out for food, water, or the littler box. I also cannot leave food out for her in my room because the other cat will eat it. I worry she's going to get hurt when someone sits down, pops open the recliner, or otherwise slides around furniture while cleaning. Not to mention I feel bad she's starving herself. Is this going to get better where she'll come out of my room and at least venture back in or idk, be normal and hang out with the other cat, or is she just not a good fit? I don't know if she's spent her whole life hiding from people or wtf went on but I don't know if she needs more time, maybe a quiter pet free home or what. I've always had cats from kitten age + so the whole shelter cat thing is new.
