Our cat has been peeing outside of his litterbox for several months now. It started about a year ago when he had crystals in his bladder. He would pee in our laundry basket, in corners of the house, and in the sinks. We took him to the vet and he got diagnosed with FLUTD, and we got a prescription.
He ate nothing but Hills prescription wet food for about 6 months. He had a few flare-ups during that time, but now his symptoms seem to have gone away completely. During flare-ups he pees frequently and only passes a small amount of urine, but for months now he's only peed a few times a day and it's a LOT of pee.
The issue is that he still only uses the litter box as a last resort. If we leave any sink uncovered, or give him access to our laundry basket, etc., he will pee there instead of in the litter boxes. We keep the boxes clean, and there are 3 around our home for him to use, but we can't seem to get him to use them consistently. Does anyone have any advice? We try to place him in his litterbox if we catch him going somewhere else, and sometimes we give him treats after using the litter box, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better.
