Foreword: This is the bf’s account but posting together. We also have another cat, a ragdoll, who is extremely friendly and the cats get along.
Gf has a 6yo cat that has a history of separation anxiety but in recent months it has escalated to him becoming aggressive to bf (hisses/growls/snarls/bites) and being unable to eat/go bathroom/runs in fear/etc when gf is not home. When she is home he is overly attached to her, meows incessantly, wakes her/us up in the night to try to cuddle with her and often won’t stay very long in the same room the bf is in.
The cat has had these issues before which we have seen a vet who prescribed Prozac to hopefully alleviate these symptoms. Unfortunately the Prozac did not work and his anxiety and the aforementioned symptoms continued.
During this initial period of escalated symptoms she was going to classes and away for 4-5 days of the week. When she concluded classes the cat had the same aggression for about another 3 weeks and then all of of a sudden poof, almost over night he became friendly and loving and social with the bf.
Fast forward about 2 months and Gf has started working full time and is out of the house most of the day. For the first 3 weeks of her new schedule he stayed happy and friendly then all of a sudden again he reverted back to his older aggressive anxious ways. Back to the exact same behavior as mentioned above.
We’re wondering what to do because we’ve tried behavioral training in the past and he doesn’t seem to respond and the Prozac did not help. Many thanks to anyone with advice!!
