Hi! I have 2 cats - Murphy (4yo male tabby) and Tallulah (2 yo female black). Both are indoor cats, but on the rare occasion I put a harness on Murphy and will let him come out to the front porch while I get the mail or to watch the birds. The other day I got a text from my upstairs neighbor asking for help to understand the instruction for flea medication (he’s elderly and couldn’t read the fine print). His cat is primarily outdoors and constantly naps on the porch i referred to before. After I found out his cat had fleas I started watching for signs that my cats had gotten them and of course, Murphy has been scratching like a madman for 2 days. I brought him to the vet today and while they couldn’t see any fleas, the found evidence of flea dirt and gave me meds for both of my cats.
My question is this: How thorough do I have to be with the house cleaning? My vet told me to wash every bit of clothing, bedding, slip covers etc, and vacuum and wash down every surface (baseboards, shelves, window sills). She also told me to do this once a week for a few months! We don’t have closet doors btw. We’re a pretty clean family, but the idea of having to wash all of our clothes and slip covers and quilts/blankets once a week sounds incredibly daunting, time consuming, and expensive! What about dry clean only items like suits? I’m alone for a month while my husband is doing dissertation research, and between running our 10 yr old to and from school every day, helping with homework, cooking, grocery shopping, running errands and everything else that a normal life involves, I don’t know how I’m going to manage doing a deep clean...that deep.
The plan is to clean our daughters room top to bottom, coat her carpet in diatomaceous earth and then seal the room off for a few days. Then i guess I’ll do all of the laundry/bedding/furniture covers etc and seal them up in bins while I do the baseboards, shelves, shake out all of our books and vacuum and wash the floors?
sigh I’m stressed.
