I have a cat, and I've had her for about a month and a half. She was a stray that I rescued off the streets when it was raining outside at one in the morning. I heard her meowing in distress in the rain outside my window, so I brought her inside. Since then, I've been spoiling her rotten with only the best food, the most expensive litter, a scratching post, an expensive tower with a second scratching post built into it, constant treats, and lots of love.
Recently, I got a new couch, and it was like her scratching posts weren't there anymore. She started using the underside of the sofa as a scratching post and was destroying my brand new sofa by scratching it up. Every time she did it, I would always drag her out from underneath the sofa and put her down in front of one of her scratching posts. It got to the point where she would do it until I stood up from the sofa, and she'd immediately run to her scratching post. So she knew that she wasn't supposed to be doing that, but she did it anyway.
My roommate suggested spraying her with water whenever she does it so she knows that we won't let her destroy our expensive furniture anymore. So she once again started ruining our expensive sofa, and I sprayed her with the bottle. She still didn't stop until after the fifth or sixth time that I sprayed her. And it's not like I'm spraying her with a chemical or something dangerous. It's water. And it's not even enough water for her to get wet. It's just a little mist. Not enough water for her to actually be wet. Just enough to let her know that destroying my house is not okay.
Since then, my cat hates me. She runs away from me when I get near her, she bites or scratches me when I try to pet her, she doesn't cuddle with me anymore, she doesn't come in my room. She only ever associates with me if she's hungry and doesn't have food. She still wakes me up in the middle of the night yowling because she wants food, but if she doesn't want something from me, she doesn't associate with me.
I've tried everything to fix my relationship with my cat and get her to forgive me (even though she was the one who was doing something wrong, and she still hasn't learned that she can't do that and is currently destroying my couch again because she knows I'm not going to do anything about it). I still wake up in the middle of the night to feed her, I try to pet her, I give her treats. I went to the store today and bought her her favourite treat as a last ditch effort to make her forgive me. But after a week of trying, she still hates me. I just tried to pet her when she was sitting next to me on the sofa and she bit me and ran away. I want my cat to forgive me and love me again, but I've done everything I possibly can to get her to realise that I love her and want the best for her, but she still hates me. What am I supposed to do to get my cat to love me again?
TL;DR my cat was destroying my sofa, I disciplined her by spraying her with water, she hates me, and nothing I do can get her to forgive me. What do I do?
