I rescued a dog a little over a month ago, she is sweet as could be but I think she has some anxiety. I live in an apartment in a city and when I adopted her I planned to take her on longer walks in the mornings and evenings to get energy out since I work all day. However it quickly became apparent she is too scared to go on walks in the urban/city area where I live. The second we get out to the sidewalk and there are cars and noises she immediately stops and her tail curls all the way up into her, she seems terrified and refuses to walk. When I have taken her to a park she seems fine to walk there but I just can’t take her there during the week as it’s 20 minutes away and there just isn’t time to drive there and back during the week. Luckily there is a Pretty large dog park at my building where I take her 3 times a day and when there are other dogs she gets to run around and play. If there aren’t dogs she just walks around and sniffs some but that’s it and she definitely ends up with pent up energy those days.
I don’t know what to do! How can I help her get over this fear of going on walks in my area? Moving to a less urban just isn’t an option for me. I just resigned a year long lease and I cannot afford to break it.
Help! She is such a sweetie and I really want to make this work, but fear she just isn’t a city dog!
