I have to put down my severely injured cat, would like advice

My cat has a serious eye injury that I can’t afford to treat. What started off as a minor scratch quickly turned into a ruptured eye and I am devastated. I don’t even understand what happened, it seemed alright and then when I came home today her eye was basically gore. I don’t know if she scratched at it all day or what. I’m extremely poor and can’t afford to take her to a proper emergency vet, so I know I will have to put her down at a shelter.

I feel awful, and like a piece of shit. I can’t help but blame myself for her injury. I also hate myself for being too poor to help her. I wouldn’t have ever taken her if I had known I would fall on such hard times.

How do I prepare to take her to the shelter with this awful injury? It looks absolutely horrible and I’m afraid of the vet telling me I’m an asshole for letting this happen. It’s a stupid thought but I can’t stop blaming myself. I’ve never seen a pet injury like this and can’t even find anything like it on google. I’m terrified she will die of sepsis or worse.

I plan to call as soon as they are open to ask for an appointment. In the meantime I am trying to put a warm compress on her eye (washcloth with warm water) to help with the puss etc. She isn’t showing any outward signs of pain and is still very friendly but I’m afraid she is hiding it.

Has anyone ever had a horrible injury happen to their pet? How did you deal with it while putting them down? Does anyone have advice?

Thank you all for your responses in advance, I may not respond bc of crying etc
