Rescued a stray. Our resident cat isn't keen and the stray won't stop meowing.

It's been just over a week since we took in the stray. We've setup a safe room for him to slowly introduce him to our current cat. I have let them smell each other through a door but the current cat will hiss so things will have to go slowly. I've been scent swapping them by using gloves to rub them both down with and also swapping rooms.

The stray is only about 6 months old and he is quite needy naturally. I try to only go to him when he's quiet but he hardly ever is. He's almost always meowing at the door. I do give him a bit of attention when I go to feed him so he won't feel neglected but as soon as I leave he'll start up again. He also bolts out the door whenever I open it and has sometimes ran into the other cat. How do I get him to stop doing this? Am I doing something wrong? Should I be spending more time with the stray or am I giving him too much?
