I want to adopt a cat (or two?) and I need some advice

Hi, my experience with a pet is basically none, although I feel like I'm pretty book-knowledgeable due to countless hours of watching random videos on dogs and cats (I love Galaxy Jackson's videos in particular haha).

I'm moving to a new city ~4 hours drive from where I live now, and I want to get a cat.

  1. I'm living with my parents in a fairly decent sized house at the moment. Given that my experience with a pet is limited, I want to get one while I'm in a familiar territory. The place I'll move to is probably going to be a studio apartment. Will the cat be stressed out moving to a new environment that's smaller, and after a 4 hour ride? Do you recommend I look for one in the new city?

  2. I'm going away as a full time student, so I was hoping to get two cats so they can keep each other company while I'm away. Is it recommended that a new owner get two cats at once?

  3. Is there any red flags I'm missing that should prevent me from getting a cat from what you can tell?

I'm hoping to get a cat (or two) from a shelter, probably older (I'll be away for hours for school at a time). Any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
