My roommates & I talked about allowing dogs at the apartment since I wanted to adopt a dog to keep me company & help me with my mental health. They all agreed & my bf & I instead of adopting we brought his dog & my roommates bought a puppy.
There’s two issues here. The first one is that my bfs dog has very bad manners & isn’t trained. So i was trying my best to train him but it got to a point where it was stressing me out rather than making me happy so I told my boyfriend that it was best if we give him away since he doesn’t pay attention to him either & his parents had him neglected in the backyard. We argued a little since he didn’t want to give him away but agreed at the end.
The second issue is that my roommate started getting frustrated with the puppy they adopted because he used to do very well when it came to not pooping in the house but when he does pee or poop she hits him very hard & screams at him & you can tell he gets scared. She thinks that way he’ll know not to pee. Lately it’s been getting worse because you can tell the puppy is so traumatized that he’s been peeing a lot more but I’ve noticed it’s just when she’s around.
She’s been saying that she doesn’t know what to do with him anymore & wants to give him away & I’ve suggested her that I can take care of him when she’s not home so that he doesn’t stay in his cage all day or if she does want to give him away to give him to me, & I have been taking care of him this past week & he’s been so happy with me, yeah he does pee maybe once inside but when I take him outside he poops & pees right away, other than that he doesn’t pee as much as how he does with my roommate.
Today I took him out of his cage around 12pm when my roommates left to work, I noticed that he was still covered in pee from last night & I got so mad because she didn’t clean him & they don’t put any blankets in his cage anymore because he pees but he’s probably so sad & cold. So I showered him & basically took care of him for the day. My roommate just got home a few minutes ago & the puppy was laying with me in the couch & when she grabs him he pees right away. Does that mean he’s scared of her?
I want to talk to my boyfriend about keeping the puppy since it didn’t work out with his dog but I feel like he will get butt hurt because I preferred the puppy over his dog but I have valid reasons. I know some people are gonna get all defensive about it but I wanted a dog to help me get better & keep me company & I never had a connection with his dog.
Also I want to bring it up to my roommates about letting me keep the dog but I don’t know how to approach the situation. I don’t know if I should tell them that they’re abusing the dog or be more gentle about the topic?
