Adopted a 5-month old cat from a shelter a few days ago. They said he would need socialization work and that it would take awhile.
The first day he only hid, but now I've got him coming out, playing with toys, eating and using the litterbox.
The only problem is the collar the shelter put on him keeps getting stuck in his mouth when he's grooming himself. But whenever I approach him he runs away. I can get him to eat out of my hand but no petting (he lightly swats at my hand, even after I let him sniff my fingers).
I could just grab him by the scruff of the neck (gently of course) but I'm afraid to scare him/set back his getting used to everything. And my guess is he won't go down without a fight.
Maybe this is a dumb post and I should just get it over with, but I'm very scared of frightening him and not exactly sure how to handle him. It seems to be a paper or plastic collar so I think I'd need to snip it off with scissors.
Should I try wrapping him up in a towel?
