Hi r/pets,
nearly a month ago one of my roommates found a very friendly cat who looked pretty skinny wandering near our home without a collar in Philadelphia. He decided to take the cat in our home. When everyone got back home we reached a consensus that if we couldn't reach the owner that we'd keep the cat. Within two days, we took him to a vet who provided a checkup on the cat and confirmed that he was someone else's cat via a chip. The veterinarian reached out to the owner who didn't answer. The veterinarian told us that if the original owner didn't reach out within 30 days that the cat would be our responsibility.
Since then we have become so attached to our little guy. He is always hanging out with us and really seems attached to my roommates and me as well. He is starting to gain some weight and look more healthy. Overall he is a real sweetheart.
Today, the original owner contacted one of my roommates asking for the cat back. They decided they'd arrange a date/time to meet up tomorrow.
My primary concern is the safety of the cat. I'm apprehensive to give the cat back to an owner who didn't bother responding to a missing call and voicemail regarding their missing cat for 20 days. He also wandered over 5 miles from his original home. I was wondering how far outside cats usually travel from their homes before returning.
Lastly, I wanted to know if we are entitled to any compensation from the owner for taking care of him as well as his vet visit.
Thanks for your insights/advice regarding what to do moving forward in advance!
