My boyfriend and I never planned on getting a pet. We recognize it as a lot of responsibility. When we lived in our last home our neighbor had a cat that he neglected. She basically started living with us and when the neighbor decided to move out he said he was going to put her down as “to not contribute to the stray cat population.” She was already living with us for the most part so of course we said we would take her in. She was mostly an outdoor cat. She ate inside and would sleep with us occasionally, but loved to spend her time outdoors and did her business outdoors. She never learned or needed a litter box. 6 years later we had to move. The actual transportation was rough, but she adjusted quickly and all was good. Then our neighbor started letting her into his home which we didn’t have problem with until he started over feeding her and got her a litter box in his home which she got accustomed to. She came home less and less. Eventually we considered she might want to live with him, but then he got a dog and she was no longer welcome. She is back home full time and we are super grateful, but now she doesn’t want to go potty outside. We put a litter box on the porch, but she is using that sparingly, going inside the house, and rarely outside like she used to. She is an older cat. Can I retrain her to go outside when she needs to? Any advice is helpful!
