My dog is 10 year old Chihuahua mix. She is sweet as can be, the polar opposite of the mean Chihuahua stereotype. She has a malignant soft tissue tumor that is sitting on and wrapping under her scapula... basically her "shoulder bone" on her front leg. Vet has determined the only way to fully remove the tumor is to amputate one of her front legs (since it's wrapping around the scapula, that has to be removed in part and her leg would not be able to be saved in the process).
I'm nervous about doing this to her. She is a super energetic dog that loves to chase, fetch, run, and jump.
Does anyone have experience with amputation in a slightly senior dog? (for reference, Chihuahuas can live 18-20 yrs). How did they adapt physically? Were there issues emotionally for the dog too? I just don't want her to suffer unnecessarily....but if this surgery can give her another 5-8 healthy years, I don't want to regret not doing it.
