Hello!
I have three cats and am currently living in a one bedroom apartment with my wife. I had to move here abruptly for work and will be moving to a larger place once my lease is up in mid May.
My three cats are all indoors and I am really not sure where the fleas came from, I noticed them in mid November.
Since then, we have done the following.
1) We got flea spray (natural stuff, smells like cloves and spices) and have spritzed down the carpets, bedding, etc...
2) Washed the clothing/beds/etc...
3) Have used two different brands of flea medication you put on their necks, making sure to get it on the skin and making sure they don't lick it off each other.
4) Have rubbed (non-toxic, vet-approved) flea spray into the cats' fur and skin, especially around the necks, base of the tail, stomach, etc...
5) We have given them a VERY thorough flea bath with shampoo that is supposed to kill fleas and prevent them for 30 days. There were definitely a lot of dead fleas.
6) thorough flea brushing every day, drowning adult fleas in soapy water.
My wife and I try to be consistent as well. One of us will wash the cats, the other will clean the carpets and do laundry.
Nothing seems to work at all. The "back of the neck" medicine has shown no real effectiveness. I will still see adult fleas on them the next day and days after. It doesn't seem to slow them down even if I make sure it isn't licked off. I have tried "Pet Armour" and "Frontline" I believe. I was hoping this would actually prevent fleas for a while, but they are itching a couple days later.
The flea shampoo AND flea spray both claim to kill fleas in all stages and prevent for 30 days. Yet, three days after the flea bath, the cats are still scratching and we're combing adult fleas off.
I'm getting pretty desperate and really don't want to take fleas to my new home when we move in May. If we get to that point and they still have fleas, my plan is to move the clothing/bedding from the old apartment, wash it thoroughly, then move it to the new home.
Once all the clean/flea-free bedding and house items are in the new home, we will take our cats to the vet for thorough flea baths/treatment so there are no living fleas and eggs, then finally move the cats to the new home immediately. Without letting them back in the old apartment to pick up new fleas.
Does that sound like a good idea if it's still an issue? Any suggestions would help immensely, I just want the fleas gone.
Thanks!
