Dogs road trip

Hi All!

I’ve got a quick question.

I’m from Sydney, NSW, Australia.

A group of my family and friends are planning to go on a road trip (roughly 3 hours drive). We will be bringing our pets. We have 5 dogs in total, 4 small dogs and 1 medium sized dog.

The four small dogs will sit on the owners laps with a seatbelt clipped onto their harness which is then looped and attached to the human seatbelt.

If this is allowed, we will be renting a 12 seater van.

I’ve tried searching online what the laws are for this and it just mainly states the drivers of the vehicles, not the passengers.

Is my suggestion allowed? Or is this against the law?

TL;DR: Going on a road trip with dogs, can the small dogs sit on the owners laps?
