Kitten comes to me to stroke him and runs away after I finish petting him

So basically I rescued a stray kitten at about 9-10 weeks old (during that sweet socialisation period) on the 1st of November 2019.

He spent a lot of time hiding under the couch during his first few weeks and meowing but he has now become more brave and familiar with us.

I don't plan to ever let him be an outdoor cat. We have treated him for his cat flu, fleas, worms etc and he his much more healthy and putting on weight.. He will spend a lot of time walking around at night and playing with his toys and sometimes in the day even if we are in the living room.. however something weird I've notice is he enjoys coming towards us slowly for a gentle pat and a good scratch under the chin until he rolls over into his back. Once this is finished, if I even make a sound he will get up and run away.

He rarely eats from our hands and if he does he has to be hiding in a little igloo type bed where he is covered.

What does this mean? Does he not fully trust me and my flatmates yet? Does he need more time to gain confidence or could it just be his personality?

He was a stray as a kitten and hid for the first few weeks as I said before whilst he was recovering from illness.

Any help would be appreciated.
