Made me Look

Sometimes cats will play "make you look" with us, staring at something until we turn around to check and it's nothing. But this is different. I think. For one year I shared a duplex with a college friend. It was a newly renovated place, all fresh paint and perfect. I had four cats There was a kitchen that elled off onto a living room that became a dining room, and off the dining room there was a doorway that led to the only bathroom and the only bedroom. One day one of the cats was walking from the dining room back to the bathroom or bedroom. I was sitting in the living room and saw the cat reach the doorway and then just stop and turn around to face the wall and then lean forward with his nose almost touching the wall. He sat like that, in a posture of acute alertness, for over two minutes. Then, he jerked like he'd just waked up, and turned and continued to walk out toward the bathroom. I realized I had seen the cats stopping there several times. So I started noticing and told my roommate and he paid attention. They ALWAYS did it. We started pointing it out to each other when one of them would do it. There they would be -- one second on their way through the doorway and the next second facing the wall like that guy in blair witch at the end. I even marked very faintly with a pencil the exact spot where they were almost touching their nose to, and it was always that same spot. We speculated that there was a nice greasy food stain not showing through the paint and they could smell it. But other than that, we had nothing. The wall was pristeen, and the only mark on it the faint pencil dot I'd made. Never figured it out, but the behavior continued as long as we lived there. It was as though they were UNABLE to pass that spot without being drawn toward it and slowed to a trancelike halt temporarily. Sure made us look.
