i recently adopted two cat and was very excited but my family has sort of ruined the experience for me :(
i’m in my twenties but still live at home for school/financial reasons but am lucky enough to have parents who treat me like an adult and know i’m very responsible. with my family’s permission (i do still live in their house after all) i adopted two adult cats about a month ago which they were initially very supportive of but my family has become so hard to deal with over all things cat related that i almost wish i hadn’t adopted my cats. they knew i was adopting these cats as my own pets (we have a family dog) and i have already paid for all their needs and they were adopted in my name but now they are aggressively pressuring me to have them be family cats, sign over their adoption, and leave them when i move out in a few years. to the more petty side of things they wanted to name the cats “as a family” even though i already had names picked out. i agreed at first thinking it would be a good bonding experience before telling them my ultimate vote but now they refuse to call the cats anything other than what they have named them and get angry when i try to call them the names i am trying to train them to respond to. to make matters worse they have no idea how to care for them and refuse to listen to how to treat them. they are pressuring me to have them be outdoor cats even though i told them before i adopted them that they would be indoor cats (which they originally supported) because our area isn’t safe for outdoor cats. they also overfeed them treats and don’t listen when i tell them they should not being going through a jumbo box in two weeks and keep giving them more and get mad no matter what i say to try to stop them.
mostly i’m just feeling very disrespected by my family and lost on how to cope with the situation. i’ve tried to talk to them but they usually just manipulate the situation against me.
