Possible Legal Advice Needed

So I left a bad roommate situation about 2 years ago and he gave me his cat. Mind you, this was a 4 year old cat that had been to the vet once since he owned him. I took him to the vet twice while I lived with former roommate for checkups (and a grooming with one) and in these last 2 years on our own, my cat and I have become inseparable. He’s come out of his timid shell and blossomed into a mischievous goofball who just wants love. I take care of his medical needs, get (overly sometimes) invested in the quality of what he eats and plays with while I’m not home, and just generally do whatever I can to care my best for him.

Fast forward to today and said former roommate texts me 30 minutes ago saying he wants my cat back if I still have him. I don’t know why he would want him back, as he didn’t like him that much anyway but I left (and part of why I took the cat) because he was abusive. I’m afraid he will take extreme measures to get my cat back since he knows where I live.

My question is- Do I have any legal leg to stand on? I’ve had my boy for 2 years and have cared more for him in that time than his previous owner did in 4. I didn’t reply to the text because of ptsd and anxiety but also. I don’t know what to do.
