Hi all,
About 2 months ago I was frantically posting about how to get our two cats (boy and girl) to get along with/accept a female stray we found before leaving town for Christmas. I was 4 months pregnant at the time and losing my mind with worry about the situation.
I want to thank everyone who reached out with advice, we were able to make it through the holidays with our cats, and my husband and I really wanted to give New Kitty the chance to acclimate without the chaos of the holidays, and give her until the end of January to make any further decisions.
After reading tons of online posts, watching ample amounts of youtube videos, and trying out suggestions from other successful multiple cat owners in our lives, we unfortunately haven’t seen much of any progress between New Kitty and our other two cats.
For whatever reason she is sweet and cuddly with my husband and I, but antagonistic and borderline hostile with both our other cats; even our sweet boy cat who we were so sure she would be able to get along with. Eventually we had make the decision to separate her from the other two as she could not stop being predatory towards them. Unfortunately we now have to keep her in our guest room/future baby room at night to let our other cats have a chance to safely roam the house.
This week after many, many hard conversations it was decided that we should reach out to nearby foster programs for New Kitty, because simply put, this is not an environment where any of the cats can thrive. Today we received an email asking that we bring her in next Tuesday to be evaluated, and if she does well she will be taken in to be fostered.
Neither one of us have been able to say it yet, but we both know this is the best thing for everyone involved, but we are completely heartbroken over it. I know we wanted this to work out so badly, and like I said she is cuddly and precious with us, but our 2 cats deserve a safe and happy home as does our baby that will be here in 3 short months.
Sorry for the novel, but again I just want to thank all of the caring people who reached out with advice, as well as grieve what could have been with fellow animal lovers during this tough time. During my pregnancy (and this past year) I have gone no contact with 2 very close family members of mine, but honestly the pain of this situation and the thought of giving up this sweet kitty has been infinitely worse.
Tl;dr
Posted 2 months ago trying to get advice on how to make our two cats get along with a stray we found before Christmas. Made it through the holidays, but even with extra time we were not able to come to a resolution between all cats. Now having to give up the stray who feels like our own to a foster, husband and I are devastated.
