I had my dog aster since he was a puppy. We had a big house in the mountains. Nobody was really near out house. But we did have lots of coyotes and bears. he was raised as a guard dog. He's a big dog. We encouraged him to bark at animals for the most of his life and he is protective of us. Four months ago we moved to the city for my husband's work. And we live IN the city in a house.
So now he barks every time he sees a dog. Loves people and hates dogs. If we are walking in town he'll try to lunge and growl at other dogs. We take extra precaution to keep him away from other dogs on walks. He's always on a short leash and we have a special harness. Well cross the street to avoid dogs etc. Today we were walking home. Our neighbors have a friendly Aussie. But their Aussie was off leash in it's front yard. He sees our dog runs up to aster (who is leashed). I'm telling the owner that our dog isn't friendly. Of course they start fighting.Nobody is hurt (my dog has never injured a dog but I know he could). I'm not sure if my dog intends to hurt or scare or be alpha because similar situations have happened before and nobody has gotten hurt.
We recently got a second dog who is very friendly with other dogs. I've been able to set up controlled environments for aster to meet new dogs using my second dog. I've been bringing aster out front with me while I garden to desensitize him. (He's leashed of course). I feel bad reprimanding him for barking because we always encouraged it. We do want him to warn us about intruders. but I was wondering if anybody had any advice on how to work with him on being dog friendly
