Shiba ran away ten months. Found him again at a shelter three hours away. How do I get him back?

Long story.

During an incredibly toxic and cataclysmic breakup, I ended up becoming homeless for almost three months. I lived out of my car, and during this time, the amount of negative energy and toxicity in the air really put an incredible amount of strain on my pup.

I had nowhere to go and zero income and had to sleep in various parking lots. One night, A couple weeks into living out of my car, while taking him for a quick walk, the buckle on his collar somehow slipped off at the worst possible timing and he just BOLTED into the night.

On top of A massive amount of stress and bullshit I was already dealing with I had now just lost my dog. And quite frankly was so focused on surviving, that I really was not able to search for him. I made a few feeble attempts, but if you’ve ever lived out of your car for more than a week, you’ll start to go a bit mental. I know it sounds like I gave up on my pup, but there’s a lot of details I left out. I seriously had no energy or resources to search for him initially.

Anyway, fast forward almost 10 months and I have not been homeless for a few months and am FINALLY employed now and have started actively searching for him again.

By the sheer grace of God I have somehow managed to locate him being housed at an animal shelter about three hours from here. I don’t know if this helps, but I live in Kentucky and the shelter is in Tennessee.

They seem to have extremely strict policies on pet adoption. I know how people are about purchasing from breeders, but I could not find a Shiba to adopt for the longest time so he was purchased from one originally, so I have all of his paperwork and everything.

I thought I could get some feedback from the community on how I should go about this. I have already emailed them, but they don’t seem to have a number I can call. They seem like a legitimate business though. I don’t know if I should get the police involved or what. I want to do everything by the books so there’s no hurt feelings or unnecessary aggression.

But I am 1000% certain that this shiba is mine.

I would even be willing to pay all of the adoption fees and backpay for shots and anything else they did for him.
