Wanting a dog, scared of the costs?!

To be fair I don’t think I’m broke, but I still plan to live with my parents for the next few years to save as much as possible. We’ve never owned a dog before because they don’t want to pick up after one, so if anything goes wrong it’ll be all on me since it technically won’t be our family dog.

After dog sitting for a few weeks, I want my own to be attached to. At this point I’m coming over to people’s houses to pet their dogs and it’s getting silly.

The thing is, I know since it’s my personal desire my parents will leave the costs up to me if anything happens. Fair, but the one thing that runs through my mind is my dog getting super sick someday and I have to pay grands out of pocket.

Has anyone gone through this dilemma before adopting? How much should you budget when adopting a puppy? I do have money saved up for rainy day funds but man, I have this love for dogs that I can’t shake and want to just come home to my own.

My girlfriend spends so much on her dog within a week or two on foods or other maintenance stuff already. Just want to give him/her a really comfy life but don’t want to be dirt broke myself because I have no idea what it might cost.
