What is this method of training I saw with tortoises?

Hello. I visited the aquarium today where they had a section for tortoises. The workers there were training the tortoises like the following:

1. They have this stick with a round ball thing at the end that they hold near the ground.
2. The tortoise comes near the stick thing.
3. The keeper clicks something and gives the tortoise food.

What is this training supposed to do and what's it called? Thanks.
