My cat grew up with another cat around that he'd run around the house with for hours. Circumstances changed and I had to move into a studio apartment as a temporary arrangement for around 4 months.
He's adjusting alright, we sleep together most nights and I got quite a few toys (the arrangement of the apartment also affords him quite a few elevated perches too).
My concern though is with playing. I anticipated needing to play with him more since he doesn't have another cat around and I'm gone for work for some of the day. Every couple of hours when I'm home (especially before bed/before leaving for work) we'll play for 10 or so minutes at a time.
My issue though is that he seems extremely engaged for the first...minute? Then he just kinda sits there and tracks his toys. He's still 100% focused on what we're doing and will usually pounce on the wand toys a couple of times, but he mostly just sits there and watches the toy with those big ol' dinner plate eyes. It's hard to tire him out this way and he inevitably wants to play again 30 minutes later. When I can really get him going and tire him out, he'll pass out on his cat tree or in my lap pretty much right after, but I haven't been able to really work him up to that degree in weeks.
I bought a variety of different colorful wand toy attachments (the wand I use has a clip at the end to swap out the actual thing he's chasing). I've done a bunch of Googling on how to move the toy to "simulate a hunt" (as dumb as that sounds) but it really doesn't seem to do anything for him. I don't leave the Troy's out anywhere he can get to them, so he shouldn't be getting bored of them laying around. Swapping the attached toy to a different one gets him going for maybe 30 more seconds, and then it's back to sitting and watching.
Any advice? Is there a particular toy that really gets your cat running around??
