Hi all! A few months ago I got a betta fish, and I have learned a LOT since then. I wanted to make a post outlining why I like this pet, but also what people need to know before getting them. If you could upvote this so more people see the information, it would be greatly appreciated!
First, let’s start off with the things that are great about them! For being a relatively simple pet, they are quite interesting. They do recognize their owners, and can be trained to do tricks. They each have their own personality, as well. For example, my fish is quite shy but interested in his tank, and enjoys hiding in his cave. My step brother’s betta is curious, a bit more aggressive, and likes going in the plants!
They don’t take up very much space, and probably require the least amount of time caring for them out of all pets, unless you have a large tank with many fish. (Aside from simple things like shrimp obviously).
They’re also a nice decoration, as long as you keep the tank clean—but be sure to remember it’s a living creature! It can also be fun to play around with different decorations.
Next let’s talk about some things you need to consider. They can be expensive—I’ve probably spent around $140 on my fish, and would have been more if I didn’t get the tank for free.
Their tanks need to be at least 2.5 gallons (and that’s a bare minimum, 5 is recommended), and they need to be cleaned more than you think. If you don’t have a filter you need daily water changes. Yes, you read that right: daily. Even with a filter, you need water changes at least weekly, especially if you have a smaller tank.
They can get sick. And you will need to treat it—whether it’s a quarantine tank, more frequent water changes, medicine for the tanks, or something else, you will probably have some issues. They can rip their fins easily and thus need silk plants (not plastic), smooth decorations, etc.
And finally—your tank needs certain things like a heater and a light. Betta fish are tropical fish and they will die if it gets too cold for them. I also highly recommend cycling your tank before getting a fish, and using live plants if possible.
TLDR: betta fish can be wonderful pets, but they can’t just be kept in a bowl like you may have been led to believe. They still require care, and can be costly.
I’m happy to give anyone wanting to learn more links or resources! Again, please upvote so I can educate more people!
