Cat litterboxes in carpeted apartments?

My husband and I adopted our first cat together about two years ago now and have since moved into our own place without roommates. Our roommates had a cat and a dog that our kitty got used to and they enjoyed playing together. Now our kitty is the only pet in our new place and my husband and I would like to get him a friend, however there isn’t an ideal place for a second litter box in our apartment. The apartment is mostly carpet. We have one litter box in the laundry room, but it’s not a big enough space to put a second one in there. There’s also not a good place to have a litter box in our bathroom either. We don’t really want to put one near the kitchen/dining area or in our room. Our spare room could work but we’re a little hesitant because it’s carpeted and the litter would be a disaster. Does anyone have ideas/tips for a second litter box location when you live in a mostly carpeted apartment?
