Cat May Have Ingested Moldy Water

Species/Breed: American Short Hair Calico Cat Age: 10 years old Spayed 11 pounds History of having a sensitive stomach No clinical signs or symptoms

We have a cat that has been drinking out of a water fountain for 6 months. We bought it in January and the filter has not been changed since then. We have never noticed any mold anywhere on the device, but today suddenly we saw black colored mold seeping up from where the filter is (not prominent at all on the surface of device where water flows out). We took it apart and the filter clearly needed to be changed (covered in black slimy mold; it was quite disgusting). Also, there was mold floating around in the water within the device and on the inner walls. We have since retired this device.

The water coming out of the fountain itself was always clear, and we haven’t seen any mold until now.

Our cat has had no symptoms and is acting completely normal. Should we take her to the vet and get her checked out? Is this mold something that could have harmed her?
