hi! I’ve been wanting to adopt a cat for the longest time (over a decade at this point), and finally got the approval from my parents. I started looking for cats on Petfinder, but got quickly overwhelmed. I also don’t know how much I can trust the shelter and rescues descriptions, because there is no way every cat out there is friendly, affectionate, and loves to be pet. I’ve also heard horror stories of shelters lying about their animals having medical conditions, and as a first time pet owner I’m already concerned about taking on the responsibility of a healthy cat, much less one with preexisting conditions (but obviously if my cat got sick I would do whatever I needed to take care of it). Due to corona, most shelters have also fostered their cats out, making it that much harder to meet them for the first time.
I’m also concerned about being able to trust their judgements on temperament. For example, I once fostered for a rescue and was only told about how sweet and cuddly the little boy was. He really was such an affectionate cat but he was the most vocal cat I’ve ever met, during all hours of the day. This wasn’t sustainable or livable for me as I am a medical student, and will be spending the vast majority of my day studying, and therefore can’t have a cat constantly talking very loudly during the day or at night when I’m trying to sleep.
I guess my question is, how do I pick a cat? I want to make sure it’s the right one for me and one I can take care of and live with. I’m nervous about finding the right one and taking on full time care without being able to call a rescue for help, but am also so excited to finally be taking this step and finding a pet of my own!
